Midi sequencing skills

Inputting midi data

dynammics

I added the use of dynamics to my snare drum by using a compressor to the snare drum part. i used this to equalise the sound of the snare drum. i did this by adding to a compressor  to the mixer tab.

Real-time performance

I played the piano sequence using live recording. After I worked the notes I live played them into logic with a metronome to keep me in time. I then quantised them to 1/16th notes. I quantized the notes to makes sure that I was in time. Using this feature made make my track sound better because the piano riff is the base of my whole project.

Step recording

After I had the main melody of the song I had to add in my drum part. First I used step recording to make a simple crochet pattern. After I had a hi-hat pattern I used my mouse to add in notes I did this by opening my piano roll and clicking in where I want notes to be. I then changed the velocity of the notes to make each note sound the same. I used this to make my rolls in perfect time and so they were all exactly the same length and velocity. I changed by division time from 16 to 48 so I could get all the notes that I couldn't get before.

Clicking in

I used the clicking in feature on my hi-hat pattern. The hi-hat pattern has fast fills in /43 notes.  To achieve the fast fills I changed my division time into 43ed notes and I clicked in 7 notes next to each other, which made it sound faster.

Editing midi

When I played my main melody edited the note lengths by making them longer so every note was the same length. I did this by stretching the length of the note so they overlap with each other. This made toe melody sound more cohesive and so that the notes flow into each other.

Inserting and deleting notes

When I was first creating my drum section I originally made the bass drum pattern wrong because there weren’t as many notes as there should be so I had to add in 3 notes to the beginning of the section using the clicking in the feature. To use this effect I used the piano roll setting and I added in the notes that were not right.

Pitch and note length

When I played my piano riff I played one note wrong so I changed the note to the right note. To do this I used my piano roll to move the notes I did this so the piano sequence will be correct. I was also able to change the length of the notes so they can all be the same length. This made the riff sound more fluid and cohesive.

Placement

Velocity
From my track, I have shown the use of velocity. When playing in my piano section I played the notes in different velocity’s however once after I played it in I changed some of the notes to a softer velocity. To improve this I could have made all the velocity’s the same to give it a more even texture.

Quantisation

I used the quantisation tool on my drum pattern. I used this because the drum pattern is the base of the song and it keeps the time so I had to make sure it was in time itself. I used this feature by highlighting all the notes and selecting the 16th notes on the quantised settings. After I did this I could see a noticeable difference in the track.

panning

i useed panning in the first section of the sng on the piano. i used the latch tool and moved the panner from left to right to created a modulating  panning sound.

Tempo track
The tempo of this song is 115 bmp. I set the tempo of the track to this because this is the tempo of the original song. I set the tempo by going to the tempo of the track clicking on it and scrolling up to 115

choosing and combining sounds.

I tried to match the sounds as well as possible to the original track. The drum plugin I used was the “classic hip-hop kit”. I used this drum kit for my hi-hats bass drums and snares. when I had played my drum sequence I didn’t like the snare drum sound. so to fix this I layered the “classic hip-hop kit” with the “disco tech kit”, I then copied my snare pattern into the new track. Layering these two sounds gave the drum pattern a thicker sound and made the snare drum pattern stand out more.

controlling expression

i used delay in my main piano part to add texture to the piano and to make the piano sound more like the original. the delay plugin i used was st delay. I got the delay by clicking o the plug-in section and adding delay.

Automation

The first section of the song starts with a piano riff and then after 4 bars the rest of the instruments come in. in this section, I used automation to add reverb to the beginning section of the piano and after 4 bars I decreased the reverb back down. I used this effect because the piano was playing alone and I used the reverb effect to give the piano a more reverberated sound.

midi controllers

the midi controller I used was an m-audio midi keyboard this keyboard uses a firewire connection to connect the midi keyboard to the computer.

controlling timbre
I used 8 different tracks with 6 different instruments. all the different instruments I used had different timbres, for example, the piano and the hi-hats have different timbres.

automation of instrument parameters

I used automation in the piano part to add more reverb into the first section of the sequence because  I wanted to give the sound more sustain and ambiance. The reverb of the piano also gave it a nice
contrast compared to the other instruments which had none. To improve i could have used the echo feature so the track could sound more reverberate.

modulation
I added modulation of  distortion to my bass line to make it more authentic to the original song.

filter cutoff

i used filter cut off on my bass section. i did this by opening the eq setting on my inspector tab and opening single band section. this opened my options of different filter cut offs to use. for my bass i used the low bass filter cut off to give my bass more depth and low end.

automation of filter cutoff
i used automation of filter cut off in my hi hat section. i used a low pass filter on the high
hat section. I used the low pass section to filter out the highs of the hi-hat, because the hihat is a high pitched instrument cutting out the high end gives the instrument a muffled sound which is similar to the original.

Arrangement

markers

I used markers in my track to locate the different sections. I used a marker to mark the intro, verse chorus and . I achieved this by right-clicking on the timeline and clicking add marker. once I had a marker set I would name it to the appropriate section. I used markers to make it easier for me to know what section of the song I'm in.

control of structure

in my rendition i had a few main sections. I made a verse section middle and a ending. i useded these different sections to make the song have more of a narrative and follow a guideline.

awareness of sections

When I had a loop of all the different components I started to arrange them. I copied all of the tracks and pasted them until I got to bar 93 because that’s how long the song is. The track starts off with a small intro section, which then leads to the verse, chorus verse bridge verse and outro. I used markers to display the different sections, using markers helped me to differentiate between the different sections.

building parts

the song started with a 3 bar solo piano section and then a bar of silence. the 1 bar of silence builds suspense and anticipation for the next section. After the first 4 bars, all the other instruments come in. In the original song, there is a pre-chorus where the mood of the song changes from an upbeat to a more mellow relaxed feel. I achieved a similar effect in my rendition by removing the drum part and adding a replacing the piano with a synth. this gave the pre-chorus section a more relaxed and lose fee. After the pre-chorus, the song then transitions into the main chorus. to help with this transition I made the piano riff come in 1 bar before the chorus starts, this is to let the listener know that we are moving into a different section of the song.

control of texture

The texture of the song changes throughout. The song starts of with a monophonic texture with just the piano but by the first verse the texture has changed to a monophonic texture, and stays the same for the rest of the song.

introduction

My song started with an introduction, which was a 4 bar piano riff. The piano plays by itself to accentuate the piano. The monophonic texture of the piano makes the focus of the song on the piano.adding in the other instruments also gives the track more of a rhythmic feel.

middle

After my introduction, all of the instruments come in. Adding in more instruments gives the track a homophonic texture which creates a more full sound.

ending
towards the ending of the song all the parts stop together to give it a abrupt anticlimactic ending. When all the parts ended the piano still reverberates for a while to give the song a sustained feel.
